Stick to the facts Recruiters are paid by their clients to find candidates who meet certain factual criteria for example, they may need someone with 10 years of industry experience, or someone with a history of working in companies over a certain size, or leading teams of 100+. Whatever the criteria, it is fact-based. Sure, the employer may also have specified some important personality traits, but they cant be judged based on your resume those will be evaluated during an interview. This means that your resume should cover all the key facts a recruiter needs to know. How many people a manager supervised. How many users an IT person supported. What budgets an executive controlled. All these facts must be on your resume and easy to see. 4. Show a little personality At first glance this might seem contradictory. I just told you to be factual and now Im saying to show some personality. But by showing some personality, I dont mean straying from the facts. I just mean that you should present those facts in fresh and interesting language that reflects who you are. Thats the best way to stand out from all those other dynamic, results-oriented team players 5. Write a profile that summarizes the important facts I like to start resumes with a summary that describes my client in just a few lines. Some recruiters skip these altogether, but the ones who read them are not interested in generic claims or descriptions of how fabulous you are. Onc e again, they want the facts. Tell them how many years experience you have. Summarize 3 of your best accomplishments. List the high-profile companies youve worked for. In other words, select whatever facts are fruchtwein impressive about you and use the resume profile to highlight those. Oh and drop the objective statement no recruiter cares what you want. He figures youll worry about your own needs. He has a client to worry about. 6. Focus on Your Impact Spend almost no time on job responsibilities and instead use the space to tell a story of how you made an impact in each of your jobs. If each section of your resume doesnt clearly show how you can make a difference, you are losing out on interviews. Dont tell me that your job required you to handle filing for the whole department instead, tell me that you cleared a backlog of 8 months filing in just 2 weeks and then developed a system to keep things running smoothly. Thats the kind of information that makes a recruiter want to m eet you. 7. Give them proof Its one thing to describe how fabulous you are, but its quite another to validate those claims by providing evidence. Have you won awards for your work? If so, highlight them right up front. Have you earned several promotions? Say so in the introduction. Are all your performance reviews glowing? Tell them Have all your former managers enthusiastically agreed to be references? Boast about that fact Any time your worth is validated by someone else, use it on your resume.Impressing recruiters isnt easy but its not impossible if you follow these 7 pointers. Technical writing involves two key competencies, indicates Atul Mathur, a professional engineer and technical copywriter in Singapore. The first is the ability to understand technical language; the second is being able to express that knowledge in a clear, concise, and coherent manner. Dan Jones, a professor of English at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, who offers technical writing workshops to engineering groups, doesnt believe technical writing or any kind of writing for that matter, comes naturally to anyone, he says. Some people are better writers than others, but their skills are typically acquired over a long period of time with much practice and hard work. Even so, engineers do have some advantages when it comes to technical communication. They are detail-oriented, bright, demanding, and not intimidated by levels of technicality. They want to know how and why something works, but like students in other college majors, they face similar challenges in communicating this technical knowledge clearly and effectively, says Jones. Modular Writing Since the Great Recession, every business is trying to do more with less. For engineers, this means training budgets have been slashed and they have to produce an increasing number of written documents themselves. These include trip reports, proposals, status reports, meeting minutes, reports documenting site visits, and lab experiments, states Gary Blake, director of the Communication Workshop in Great Neck, NY, and author of The Elements of Technical Writing. In my 25 years of teaching seminars in technical writing, I have met very few engineers who are comfortable with using simple language, organizing documents for the readers benefit, keeping sentences and paragraphs short, and getting to the point. One method of dealing with the increased volume of reporting is modular writing. Many companies are moving away from individually authored technical documents to team-authored modules of information. These moduleseach reduced typically to single topicsare then reused in a wide variety of company documents, says Jones. One technique is Darwin Information Typing Architecture, or DITA. This modular writing, once successfully implemented, can save a company thousands of dollars in documentation costs. Sometimes engineers try to circumvent technical writing by misusing PowerPoint and other presentation software, overloading technical presentations with data instead of explaining what it means in clear and concise language. I just worked with a group of 30 engineers to help them make more effective technical presentations, says Jones. PowerPoint as a medium is designed for simplicity with, ideally, the individual slides serving as prompts for the speaker, not as handouts for the audience. But many technical professionals crowd far too much information on almost every slide. And, in many cases, various company protocols or practices require them to provide all of this information in this manner. Simplicity in Complexity Engineers often find it difficult to communicate their technical knowledge to audiences that have less technical backgrounds. For example, engineers must write reports and convey the essential technical details for managersoften a tough challenge because many managers dont understand the technology. The greatest issue is the inability to see simplicity in complexity, says Mathur. How can they strip away the complexity of a process or system and present it in a way that others can understand, with minimum effort? After all, technical writing is not just about language skillsits also about how we think. There is no substitute for trainingone-on-one, webinar, seminar, or having instant access to a subject expert or mentor. A webinar has the advantage of being inexpensive and convenient. A team or department of engineers take a 90-minute online class that reviews writing samples, gives writing exercises, answers questions, and offers future access to an instructor, says Blake. Technical communication is essential for career advancement for all technical professionals. Mastering the content of a discipline is, of course, important, but this subject expertise becomes much more valuable and marketable if you know how to communicate your subject expertise to a variety of audiences in numerous kinds of technical documents and technical presentations, says Jones. This legislation promotes afterschool and summer science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs as vital parts of the K-12 STEM education ecosystem. Currently, many afterschool and summer programs include STEM as a standard part of their comprehensive programming. Afterschool providers recognize the importance of improved STEM education for their students and that hands-on, inquiry-driven STEM is in line with afterschools overall approach to education. Practitioners are able to directly witness the impact afterschool STEM programs have on students when they see youth engaged in and excited about STEM activities, asking questions, and wanting to learn more. However, funders, policy makers and other stakeholders often want data that substantiates such claims and demonstrates positive changes in a variety of outcomes: interest and engagement in science, greater knowledge of STEM careers, election of school science classes, and, sometimes, improved test scores in science and math. The legislation is based on the findings of Examining the Impact of Afterschool STEM Programs, a recent research project of the Afterschool Alliance. The paper provides an overview of some of the recent research findings about the importance of afterschool and other out-of-school time experiences for STEM learning, including: Afterschool STEM programs are successful in engaging and retaining large numbers of students from diverse populations. Young people in these programs express curiosity and interest in STEM subjects, in ways that extended that interest in school and out of school. Afterschool STEM programs can have an impact on academic performance. Participants come to understand the value of STEM in contributing to society and solving global and local problems, and they begin to see how STEM intimately connects to their everyday lives. Young people who take part in these programs display an increased awareness of career options, as well as a nuanced understanding of those careers. On July 28, Rep. And during that time, through a lot of trial and error, we’ve learned a lot about how to do exactly that.Here are 12 of our most valuable shortcuts:1. Cap the quantity and duration of meetings.Meetings are in most cases a waste of time. They create an illusion of productivity, but often drag on for way too long. But it doesn’t have to be that way.There are 10â€"15 minutes in every meeting that account for 80% or more of the meeting’s value. You can prevent meetings from becoming unproductive by capping their length to 30 minutes, or by setting strict personal rules such as: “I will not spend more than 30% of any given day in meetings.” Or, even better, create a “No Meeting Wednesday” policy like Facebook did in 2012.These kinds of adjustments might seem limiting, but they actually will encourage everyone on your team to treat meetings more efficiently.2. Spend less time on your poor performers.It’s a natural tendency to want to invest  more  time in employees who are struggling, as you want to help them.But the truth is, perma-struggling employees who require help from team leads or founders are massive time-sucks. You should provide such employees with tools and resources to improve, sure, but the majority of your internal energy should instead be  invested in employees who are excelling - those who could turn into your company’s future leaders.That’s an investment that will pay off. Investing in employees who continue to struggle and don’t create unique value, on the other hand, does not.3. Spend less time at conferences and networking events.Some founders fixate on this idea that conferences and networking events are inherently valuable and always worth your time. They’re not. As a company leader, only attend conferences that will help your company grow in tangible ways and against trackable metrics. And always be weary of cost. It’s likely you can network as effectively on your own as you can by going to conferences - and dinners or drinks are much cheaper than $5,000 conference fees.4. Hire people who care.There are people who truly care, and then there are people who just  want a job and will be fine working anywhere. Imagine a software engineer who’s just as happy working on a mobile game as he or she is working on some legacy banking platform.Hiring decisions are some of the most important investments you can make, especially when the team is still small, so it’s important that you screen for people who will live and breathe your company culture and get fired up about the products that you’re building. If they care, it will show in all aspects of their work, and others on the team will notice. When your company is still in its formative stages, you should  only  hire people who live and breathe your product and industry. And you should fire people who don’t.5. Give team members autonomy (and refrain from micro-managing).The more your employees are able to drive functions, domains, and features autonomously, the more time you’ll have to focus on other critical tasks.It pays, then, to give out that sort of autonomy - and, on the other side of the spectrum, to avoid the habit of micro-managing. This can be difficult, especially early on when you want to be heavily involved in every critical company decision. But micro-managing other people means you’re  not  working on other potentially mission-critical tasks. That’s simply not sustainable as a founder.6. Don’t give every task the same priority.In the same vein, it’s critical to understand that not every problem carries the same weight. Prioritize tasks in accordance with which is most immediate, and which will t ake more time.You can do this at the start of each day. Ask yourself: what are the three most important things I need to do today? What are the smaller things I might be able to accomplish easily later on? Set this strategy, then abide by it, delaying other non-immediate items that arise until tomorrow. It’s fine to have a bit of a backlog.7. Don’t follow every piece of advice.Just as not all problems are created equal, neither are all pieces of advice.In fact, you should only spend time and energy focusing on advice or feedback from folks who have some  skin in your game - who are incentivized to provide you with thoughtful, prudent advice - or who have proven themselves to possess an interesting and valuable perspective.Wisdom, in this sense, should be weighted - and never asked for just for the sake of asking.8. Block off chunks of time to “go deep” on specific tasks.Some tasks do require longer amounts of uninterrupted time and focus. It’s important that you identif y which tasks fall into this bucket, and that you then block off times on your calendar to give those items the focus and attention they need. Set your calendar purposefully, then abide by it. If an email comes in during one of these blocks, don’t respond to it until that time’s up.That’s the only way you’ll force yourself to finish those tasks or solve those problems.9. Outlearn your competition by making small bets.We learn faster by doing and trying than by talking and thinking.So when it comes to learning about a potential hire, or analyzing the merits of a new feature,  test those things with small bets  rather than simply talking about them in the abstract. Hire that potential employee for a month-long trial. Test that feature in a small geo-targeted beta release. This will win you the insight you seek more effectively and in less time.10. Learn to leverage market momentum.Look at the market around you, and ask yourself what is working in your favor and what is working against you. Identify what challenges might give you resistance, and preemptively work around them. This will allow you to proceed seamlessly in whichever direction you’re headed.Momentum trends are especially critical when it comes to distribution and user acquisition costs, since the ad channels and distribution tactics are always evolving.11. Motivate your team through transparency into decisions.I’ve found that nothing motivates people as quickly or as seamlessly as just being transparent with them.By giving our team  insight into why exactly we’ve made a certain decision  or are pursuing a specific strategy, I spend  far  less time convincing them of as much through presentations or additional meetings. “Closed door” decisions are a lot more likely to receive pushback, and the less time you have to spend motivating your team around a new strategy or focus, the better.12. Design for speed instead of for “cool.”Many people seem inspired to design or build new platf orms or features that are innovative and cool simply because they think that innovation is cool and sexy. They do this even when what they need already exists in a serviceable - if not entirely flashy - version.Don’t do that. It’s hardly ever worth reinventing the wheel or over-complicating something just because you want to be unique or original. Should You Highlight  Failures in Your Resume Should You Highlight  Failures in Your Resume But, when you consider the benign context that the failure  resume emerged it doesnt sound quite as bonkers a notion. It seems it has its roots in the mentoring protocol of one Tina Seelig, Stanford Technology Venture Programs executive director. She encourages, well empowers if we are to be accurate, all her students to create a failure resume, allowing them to embrace all their experiences. It is something that can be created alongside the typical success resume, (which we all know about), and the students are required to address their failures and understand what they have learned from them and see how they have applied that learning to help them be a more effective individual going forward. The purpose of this tool is to help students understand that failure is a crucial part of the learning process, but it wasnt explicitly intended to see the light of day; that is, land on the employers desk alongside a success resume. But, this isnt to say it cant have some application in the outside world in the job seeking and personal development process. It is clear that more and more employers are seeking to assess candidates not just on their achievements, but on how they have responded to challenging situations and failures, such as the challenging nature of the modern business environment. They feel it gives them a more authentic view of the candidate, enables them to see whether theyd like to go to war with you, or see how you respond in a fire fight. Now, I am not saying that candidates should whip out their failure resumes when asked the questions about “weaknesses” or “biggest failures”, but having prepared a failure resume enables you to produce a reassuring response as you will be able to recall the most relevant failure, your key learning and how it has made you a more effective person today. So,  on this basis, a failure resume can be an excellent personal development and job search tool. But, can its use be extended? Should employers ever sight your failure resume; could it actually enhance an application? Now, unless asked for, I think it might be too strange, (and just a bit too ahead of the curve), for the typical recruiter to receive a list of failures in your job application, (even if it is written to the failure resume format). A time pressurized busy recruiter probably wont get it and wont have the time to get it. Theyll be looking for qualifications, achievements and experience to see how well it matches the job description. Failure resumes are interesting but potentially a distraction in this setting. Thats why if you intended to use a failure resume as some novel way to stand out, I dont think you  should push  it on employers at this stage by emailing it to them. Candidates should draw employers to the failure resume by inviting them to view the document as published in the context of a personal branded blog. You could make the invitation in your cover letter or link to it in your success resume. Id recommend that you head up the failure resume with some context, perhaps referring to this article or Tina Seelings piece on the failure resume to put it into context. Overall, I dont think you should include failures in your resume; it is too distracting. But, if presented effectively on a personal blog so that employers can choose to read at will, it may enable you to appear like a more genuine applicant, able to survive a dog fight, who can come back from failure and apply their learning to make themselves a more effective individual. Of course, this is an experimental approach to job applications, and if you use it, monitor it closely. if you think it is hindering your applications you should probably put this down as a worthwhile but failed initiative from which you have learned something new, and move on.Master the art of closing deals and making placements.
